Yogis and Yoginis,
I am very excited to begin leading the first yoga practice at Bayou City CrossFit. A detrimental part of any athlete’s activities is the stretching and rest period that should take place before and after, especially when that activity involves quick, intense movements and often heavy lifting. Yoga is a great way to avoid injury, stay evenly toned, reverse the stressful effects of movements we repeatedly make everyday and improve strength in areas you didn’t know existed.
Yoga offers a unique opportunity to step away from our hectic and sometimes strenuous lives and reflect on our overall wellbeing. Your yoga practice is a chance to truly let go of the tensions you’ve been holding onto or that are setting you back. The added bonus is that you’ll probably surprise yourself and improve in your athletic abilities, especially your flexibility, an often overlooked, yet crucial part of your CrossFit workout.
I teach Vinyasa flow yoga which connects movements with the breath for a restorative practice full of inversions and a much-needed chance for reflection. For those of you concerned that yoga has nothing to offer you in terms of a challenge, think again. Although it may be a challenge your body is not quite used to, it’s something everyone can benefit from. And yet, yoga isn’t all about challenges, either. The biggest struggle most of us will have during our practice, will be letting go of expectations for ourselves and focusing on the now…something that we can carry over to other aspects of our lives, especially CrossFit.
My goal for all you CrossFitters is that during your yoga practice, you can concentrate on your breathing, leave your stresses and thoughts behind, and focus on improving your strength, while gaining the flexibility and concentration necessary to achieve all your athletic goals.
Vic will be adding a yoga tab on the website shortly. Until then, we will be working on a schedule to see which class times work best for everyone. Our first classes will be free, so come give it a try. We’ll meet this Wednesday, March 10th at 7 p.m. I hope to see you all there!
Namaste!
